A Complete Guide to RJ45 Plug Crimpers

2025/8/18 HCI

RJ45 plug crimpers come in many variations, which can make choosing the right one a challenge. The real question is: how do you know what makes a good one? It comes down to three essentials—precise blade height, a clean wire cut, and compatibility with your plugs. In this article, we’ll break down these key checkpoints and guide you through selecting the crimper that best fits your needs.

Key Points in Quality Crimping

Checkpoint 1: Blade Height

The gold-plated pins (or blades) are the key components for data transmission, as they mate with the gold-plated pins of jacks. Blade height is critical: We measure from the top of the crimped blade to the bottom of the plug’s body, and all eight pins should be between 5.89mm and 6.15mm to meet network standards.

Checkpoint 2: Clear Cut

Pass-through plugs benefit from a clear cut on the wires, minimizing excess length outside the plug to ensure smooth mating with jacks. Consistent, flush trimming provides a neat, professional appearance and optimal performance.

Plugs with two-row wire positions are particularly challenging to trim compared to one-row configurations. Some tools struggle with flush cuts on these plugs, leaving an uneven surface, excess wire, or even untrimmed insulated conductors. To avoid inefficiencies, ensure your tool is compatible with your plug type for the best results.

Types of Modular Plugs

Modular Plugs come in many forms—8P/6P/4P, pass-through and non-pass-through, with or without strain latches, one- or two-row wire positions, and with or without ground collars (also known as cable clips, back-tail clips, or grounding hooks). Selecting the right crimping tool depends on your plug type.

To make it easier, we’ve created a chart that shows what each tool supports:

The chart above highlights 4 main modular plug specifications along with 6 additional tool features. Matching the correct specifications ensures quality crimping, while the added functions determine how efficient and user-friendly the tool will be on the job.

4 main modular plug specifications:

  • 8P/6P/4P Compatibility – Some tools support only networking 8P plugs, while others include dies for crimping 6P and 4P telecom plugs as well.
  • Thru-Plug Support – Equipped with a built-in cutter that trims excess wires when working with pass-through plugs.

  • Adjustable Strain Latch Presser Bar – Allows crimping plugs with or without a strain latch. Without it, a crimper can only handle plugs with strain latch.

  • One-row / Two-row Support – Designed to accommodate single-row wire positions, or both one-row and two-row configurations.

6 additional tool features:

  • Ground-Crimp (Cable Clip / Back-Tail Clip) – Provides a slot to neatly clamp the grounding hook into place.

  • Palm-Sized – Compact(007A8H04, 007A8H05), lightweight(007A8H02), or stapler-style designs(007A8M02) for added convenience.

Using our tool 007A8H05 as an example:

It supports 8P pass-through plugs, is recommended for one-row plug types, and includes a round cable stripper for 5.0–8.0 mm cable diameters along with a built-in cable cutter.

How to Choose the Right Tool

  1. Identify the modular plug type you're working with and match it to the tool.
  2. Check the additional features and see if they fit your on-site needs.
  3. If quality is your priority, make sure your crimper passes the two key checkpoints of blade height and clean wire cut.

Every crimper we offer is rigorously tested in our lab, with detailed specifications listed on each product page to help you choose with confidence. Explore the options on our website, or reach out to us directly for tailored recommendations.
