Fiber optics have become indispensable in modern data centers. As AI and cloud technologies continue to evolve, hyperscale data centers upgrade and replace equipment at an accelerated pace to meet ever-increasing bandwidth demands. Transmission speeds of 100G and higher are now considered the baseline for handling large volumes of data traffic across multi-user environments.

With each generation of equipment, fiber connector interfaces evolve as well. The trend moves toward smaller, higher-density connectors that maximize port capacity within limited rack space. During these transition periods, it’s common to see a mix of connector types, ranging from LC and SENKO® VSFF connectors to older ST or FC types - once standard, now largely regarded as legacy interfaces in today’s high-speed networks.

Port Density

And yet, LC duplex connectors continue to dominate the fiber patch cord market. The reason lies in the widespread ecosystem already built around LC. Most transceivers, patch panels, and adapter plates are designed for LC interfaces, making them the most practical and widely supported option for deployment and maintenance.

Still, the choice depends on the interfaces your equipment supports.

Zipcord vs. Round-Duplex

Both LC zipcord and round-duplex patch cords are available to suit different deployment needs.

Zipcord consists of two 2mm jackets zipped together, allowing the fibers to be quickly separated without tools—ideal for fast polarity reversal or easy identification of individual fibers during field testing. Round-duplex, with two fibers inside a single 2mm jacket, is ideal for high-density environments, making routing simpler, reducing bending stress, and supporting better airflow in patch panels and trays.

Choosing between them depends on your cabling layout and density requirements.

Polarity Swap

Polarity is critical because the transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) fibers on one end must match the Rx/Tx on the other end. In the field, it’s sometimes necessary to swap fibers (reverse polarity) to ensure proper signal flow between devices. The PoliSwap Series makes this process simple, allowing polarity changes without any tools.

  • For UPC connectors: Just remove the locking latch, flip the LC duplex, and put the latch back on. This reverses Tx and Rx instantly.
  • For APC connectors: Remove the locking latch, rotate each fiber 180° upside down, flip the LC duplex as with UPC, and then put the latch back on. This both swaps Tx/Rx and keeps the 8° angled ends properly aligned.

HCI offers a full range of fiber connectivity options to meet diverse installation needs.

For pigtails, HCI provides LC 900 µm pigtails in 12-fiber count — the most common configuration in fiber management — with higher counts available upon request. Pigtails with SC connectors are also offered.

For patch cords, HCI supplies zipcord assemblies with LC or SC connectors. We recommend the PoliSwap Series, built with round-duplex fiber for high-density applications and featuring freely reversible polarity.

For VSFF solutions, HCI offers LC-to-SENKO CS® and SN®-to-SN® configurations to support the most space-constrained, high-density environments.

All options are available in OS2 G.657.A and OM1–OM5 bend-insensitive fiber types. Explore HCI’s lineup and find the style that’s made for your application.
