Cookies
Cookies are small text files placed on your device by your browser. They do not contain viruses and cannot damage your device. We use two kinds:
Necessary cookies keep the site working correctly. The site cannot function properly without them.
Analytics cookies are set by Google Analytics and let us measure how the site is used.
You can control cookies through your browser settings, including blocking them or asking to be notified before one is set. Blocking necessary cookies may stop parts of the site from working. You can also block Google Analytics specifically by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
Website analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how the site is used, for example how many visitors arrive, which pages they read, what they search for, and which countries and languages they come from. We do not use it to identify you personally.
Google Analytics user data and event data are retained for 14 months, after which Google deletes them on its own processing schedule. Google's privacy policy is at https://policies.google.com/privacy.
Newsletter
Our newsletter is sent through Mailchimp, a service operated by Intuit Inc. in the United States. When you subscribe, your email address and subscription details are stored on Mailchimp's servers. Mailchimp also records whether an email was opened and which links were clicked, which we use to see whether our content is useful.
Every newsletter contains an unsubscribe link. You can unsubscribe at any time, or email hci@hci.com.tw and we will remove you. Mailchimp's privacy notice is at https://www.intuit.com/privacy/statement/.
Why we process your data
1. To answer your enquiry and supply the product or technical information you ask for. This is necessary to take steps at your request before entering into a business relationship, and is in our legitimate interest in running our business.
2. To send you our newsletter. We do this on the basis of your consent, given when you subscribe, and you can withdraw it at any time.
3. To measure and improve the website. This is in our legitimate interest in keeping the site useful, and, where local law requires it, on the basis of consent.
4. To keep the website functioning and secure. This is in our legitimate interest in protecting our systems and yours.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not pass it to third parties for their own marketing.
We share it only with the service providers who make our website and communications work:
1. Amazon Web Services, for website hosting and data storage
2. Microsoft, for our company email
3. Google, for website analytics
4. Intuit Mailchimp, for sending our newsletter
Each of these processes data on our instructions under a contract. We may also disclose data where we are required to do so by law, or to establish or defend a legal claim.
Where your data is stored
Enquiries you send through the site are stored in our website database, hosted on Amazon Web Services, and are also forwarded to our company email, which runs on Microsoft 365.
Our analytics and newsletter providers are based outside Taiwan, so your data may be transferred outside your own country. Where such a transfer is subject to data protection law, it is covered by the standard contractual clauses or other safeguards offered by the provider concerned.
How long we keep it
Enquiry and business correspondence. We keep this for as long as the business relationship is active. Where a transaction has taken place, the related records are kept for the period required by accounting and tax law in Taiwan.
Newsletter subscriber data. Until you unsubscribe, and for a short period afterwards to record that you asked to be removed.
Website analytics data. 14 months.
You can ask us at any time to delete data we hold about you, and we will do so unless we are required to keep it. See Your rights below.
