In data center deployments, MPO Y-Cables are commonly used to bridge different generations of switch and NIC optics - for example, connecting 400G ports to existing 200G infrastructure. They also simplify cabling in structured MPO trunk environments by allowing direct breakout at the patching field.

A typical scenario in the field is: MPO-12 (4-lane) → 2 × MPO-12 (2-lane each). This setup is widely used when a 400G uplink on a spine switch needs to fan out into two 200G downlinks toward leaf switches. The usual modules for this breakout are 400G QSFP-DD SR4 on the 400G side and 200G QSFP56 SR2 on each 200G side.

MPO-12 400G → two MPO-12 200G:

  • MPO-12 (4-lane) → 2 × MPO-12 (2-lane) → 400G parallel optic split

For higher speeds, such as 800G breakouts, the wiring is: MPO-16 (8-lane) → 2 × MPO-12 (4-lane each). A common use case is an 800G port on a next-gen switch fanning out to two 400G ports on lower-tier switches within core–spine data center interconnects. These breakouts are also useful in AI/ML clusters and HPC GPU fabrics, where 800G ports are becoming standard but need to connect to existing 400G infrastructure.

Structured cabling environments may deploy MPO-16 trunk cables, while connected equipment often uses MPO-12 based 400G SR4 optics. This is why the MPO-16 → 2 × MPO-12 breakout is necessary. The typical module setup is 800G QSFP-DD800 SR8 on the MPO-16 side and 400G QSFP-DD SR4 on each MPO-12 side.

MPO-16 800G → two MPO-12 400G

  • MPO-16 (8-lane) → 2 × MPO-12 (4-lane) → 800G parallel optic split

We offer both MPO and MTP connectors with female-to-female prewired configurations commonly used in data centers. Custom wiring options are also available.

Our products are categorized into four groups:

  • MPO-12 → 2 × MPO-12 with OS2 cable
  • MPO-12 → 2 × MPO-12 with OM3/OM4/OM5 cable
  • MPO-16 → 2 × MPO-12 with OS2 cable
  • MPO-16 → 2 × MPO-12 with OM3/OM4/OM5 cable
